It came and it's a huge pewter model. It took me 6 hours to file down just the two main pieces to fit together. Its is going to need countless hours of green stuff in order to fix all the gaps and make it look nice before it can be painted.

So this was announced today:
Time to dust off my Box 'o Boyz and let my Orks Waaagh across the table. I'm actually looking forward to it. It'll be good to get some play time with them in again before they get back-shelved when I rebuild my Necron Army.
I have most of the Necrons I want, just short a Ghost Arc or three. But I said I wouldn't rebuild that until my Warriors of Nurgle Army is done. I've made some good headway there. The Lord and Sorcerer are painted and the Knights and Chosen have their armor and horns mostly complete. Just need to add shading and paint all the details, and horses, for them to be done. My Hellcannon came in and after many hours of filing got it all fit together and glued. Its going to need quite a bit of work with GreenStuff before it ready to paint. Darn old pewter models. Very time consuming, but the models look great when finished.Yoderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15081783998629992609noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1321640833311614956.post-37775638609569301252012-02-08T20:21:00.001-06:002012-02-08T20:22:31.281-06:00Recent HappeningsThe Magic pre-release was the weekend before last and had a great turnout. 19 Players entered and it ended up with Chris (Chaos Minion) in first and myself in 4th.

The new set Launch was last weekend but only had 6 players so was rather disappointing. But a couple of them were newer players so it was good to give them some tips on playing and deck building. Steve won first and myself second.

The next tournament will be in 3 weeks but I'm not expecting much of a turnout as the format is prebuilt decks and many don't want to pay to enter as they know they will most likely be beat by those like myself with better decks/more experience.

This weekend I'm eager to play Warhammer Fantasy. My Hellcannon came in and I'm looking forward to trying it out on the table. (if I can get it to fit together...stupid old pewter models). I'm hoping to get in a big team battle so I'll be there pretty much as soon as the store opens.
Yoderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15081783998629992609noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1321640833311614956.post-71182889393856053722012-01-25T00:41:00.002-06:002012-01-25T00:41:33.788-06:00Amusing video on the history of the Space Marines.

Yoderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15081783998629992609noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1321640833311614956.post-81018605078845667312012-01-20T17:55:00.000-06:002012-01-20T17:55:53.263-06:00New ProjectSo much like all my friends and fellow wargamers at Segmentum North, I am setting a project goal for myself.

That's my Warhammer Fantasy Warriors of Chaos army, newly primed and soon ready to paint. That's right, I'm actually going to paint something. My goal is to have this army fully painted, based and flocked to tournament standards to include shading, highlighting, extra details, flocked bases, and minor conversions. The units yet to be purchased are a Daemon Prince (going to be an almost total conversion), a Hell Cannon, and a Giant. They are going to be worshipers of Nurgle so will have rusty metal armor and green details/highlights.

To overcome my usual intolerance for painting I have to distract myself by watching movies and TV shows I like. Basically I have to distract myself from the hated chore so I don't mind it as much. I think I'm also going to start painting during roleplaying sessions.

My goal is to have these guys done by the end of May.Yoderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15081783998629992609noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1321640833311614956.post-21575259251514532802012-01-15T14:59:00.002-06:002012-01-15T15:10:54.866-06:00Nuclear Winter Results
<colgroup><col width="207"></col><col width="82"></col><col width="54"></col><col width="84"></col><col width="82"></col><col width="54"></col><col width="93"></col><col width="82"></col><col width="54"></col><col width="56"></col><col width="56"></col><col width="84"></col><col width="56"></col><col width="84"></col><col width="84"></col></colgroup>

I quite enjoyed the characters and really like the setting. I liked the fight scenes the most because I was able to actually see all the moves and fighting described in my head, I’ve done most of the moves used at one point or another in real life. How, you ask? In addition to being a gamer I’m also a member of the SCA, Society for Creative Anachronism, that does medieval recreation. I study and practice a bit of 16th century Italian fencing (Capo Ferro if you were wondering). I actually know and have met the author, he is known SCA wide as Don Simon Moricar, and he is a very experienced fencer so the fighting scenes in the book are very realistic.

So how does this tie into gaming? After all, that’s what this blog is about. Well, I liked the setting and characters well enough that I decided to create my own role playing campaign based on the book. Initially the city described sounds very much like a medieval Tangier or Marrakesh but with the fencing elements it’s would fall into more of a Renaissance setting. I’ve actually been to Tangier so it’s pretty easy to visualize the crowded, twisting streets and markets. And my knowledge of fencing makes it pretty easy to figure that in. I like the Pathfinder rules so I’m using that as a base. It is a very low fantasy world with very little magic so the only caster classes I’m allowing are bard and wizard. Even those will have their spell lists limited and I’m only allowing one caster in the party. Magic is very powerful as it is very rare so you won’t be able to start out with the all the normal spells, you have to find them in spell books.

Other than the magic it is pretty much a “normal” setting so I’m only allowing humans and animals, no fantasy races like kobolds and elves (sad I know, I’ll miss the elves). The world is going to be all about stealth and speed, very much a “daggers in a dark alley” type place. The player alignment will be restricted to Lawful Neutral, Neutral, Chaotic Neutral, Lawful Evil, and Neutral Evil (lawful just means you have some sort of a code or creed that you live by). The party will be bad (or at least amoral) people working for other bad people trying to move up in the ranks of a mob-family type organization.

I’ve spent a couple months putting it all together. Deciding what classes and archetypes to allow, how to modify the spells and magic item use to fit the world, how to make this my world and have it work but still allowing for the players to play their characters the way they want without forcing them to do things exactly as I want. That’s always the hard part of creating your own campaign setting; it is far easier to just use the premade or published adventures. Then you don’t mind if things don’t go the way you thought. But is it more satisfying to me to use something that you came up with yourself because you get into it more.

I realize now that I forgot to mention something in my history of role playing post. I actually created my own system once while I was in the military. I was a gun guard for an exercise so I pretty much did nothing but stand in front of a missile storage facility for hours at a time with nothing to do. When I say my own system I mean everything: which dice were used to represent what, the mechanics of how it all worked together, character interaction and creation rules, etc. It took me about seven days to do it all, about 10 hours a day, figuring it all out while standing guard then typing it up on my few lunch or bathroom breaks. The only thing I didn’t finish were the rules for magic (always the most complicated thing in any system). I think I still have it saved on my computer somewhere. I should finish it sometime and see if it actually works with a group.

Back to the main point:

Role playing has come a long way from where it used to be. Before you had to do everything on paper so keeping track of all the damage and curses, etc, was a bit of a pain. Now there is a computer program for that. Set everything up in there and it keeps track of your characters & enemies health and status with just a few button clicks. It even runs the combats for you and keeps track of whose turn it is, very handy. Having all the rule books there and character sheets for everyone is nice, but no longer necessary. It’s all on the computer.

I’m looking forward to running my new campaign. I wanted to start before Christmas but Skyrim came out and that took up most of my free time for a couple weeks (understandably). Now the holidays are over and everyone can go back to a normal schedule. I have the first adventure planned out and have some friends that are interested in playing. One has read the book and I leant it to another to read and they like the setting. I am ready for character creation. I have a basic idea of my overall plot but I need to know who the characters are before I can create more adventures, so I can tailor it to them. Since this is very heavily modified from the actual Pathfinder rules for characters I’ll be working very closely with each player as their character develops. Figuring out what works in the setting that makes a character they like.

The only thing really stopping us now is finding a location to play. Play time will be Sunday afternoons when the game store isn’t open. This is going to be an adult group and it’s an evil campaign so probably best if kids aren’t around. One of the players is a bit boisterous so it should be somewhere private. I’m still living in a friend’s spare bedroom so I can’t host. I will be living in a house once the heating is finished but we haven’t been able to get a hold of the ductwork guy and he was supposed to start last week.

Life, why are you ruining my gaming plans?
Yoderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15081783998629992609noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1321640833311614956.post-42970622534507041482012-01-03T19:32:00.002-06:002012-01-11T18:55:06.314-06:00Organizing and Judging Tournaments
The LGS (local game store) hold 2 annual 40k tournaments every year, one in the winter (Nuclear Winter) and one in the summer (Tournament of Fire). The winter one on MLK weekend is the biggest one and draws the most people. The summer one is usually on a weekend around Independence day so attendance varies as many people go on vacation around then.

A couple years after I started playing the judge for the summer tournament ended up not being able to do it, and attendance was very small that year, so most decided not to come. I stepped up and said that I would put together something for the few who did: A couple scenarios using abnormal units etc, just for fun. It was soon after that the tournaments stopped being “Rouge Trader Tournaments” so anyone could be the judge so I started to run some of the summer tournaments. However, we still get prize support from them as it’s still a Games Workshop sponsored tournament.

A few months after I started playing Magic I noticed that we never had real tournaments. So I setup a couple unofficial ones, with the store’s permission, just sponsored by them. After a few of those I was asked to be the judge for the official Wizards sponsored tournaments held 3 times every three months. I agreed to that and like running them as a judge can play in them as well. In Games Workshop tournaments you cannot.

Sanctioned tournaments are honestly a hassle to run as there are all kinds of rules that have to be followed and arguments often break out over who is interpreting the rules correctly. I prefer unsanctioned where you can make up your own rules. But anytime money has been paid with prizes on the line people are going to do everything they can to win and get upset if rules are thought to be violated. 40k tournaments can be a pain as they have the most arguments but that’s where I can fall back on years of experience and memorization of the rules to settle disputes.

Magic has more intricate rules that I am not completely familiar with as I’ve only been playing for less than 2 years. That and new cards and rules come out every couple months that change how the games run so it can be a big headache. There I call upon the more experienced players to help with rule disputes I am unsure of.

A few years back the store decided the 2 annual tournaments would be open to all games so there would be tournaments for 4 or 5 different game systems running on the same day. This never really bothered me before as I wasn’t playing Magic competitively yet and it wasn’t an official Magic tournament so either someone else ran it or it was just played causally while I played in the 40k tournaments if I wasn’t running them. While I do well in the summer tournament, and usually end up placing, the winter tournament is another story. Every year I end up with horrible luck and get the hardest opponent army for me to beat at each scenario and table setting. My dice don’t seem to like it either and end up rolling badly. This can be attested to by many people who have come to the tournaments over the years. Last Nuclear Winter was my last attempt to do well and the luck curse stuck again so I decided I wasn’t going to play in any more. So I agreed to run the Magic tournament at this year’s Nuclear Winter.

The 40k side of Nuclear Winter has been run by the same person, Lacy, for as long as I can remember and the Tournament of Fire switches back and forth between me and Chaos Minion. This year Lacy got ready to start preparing to organize it, but realized he was going to have to work. So Chaos Minion agreed to run it, since I had run the previous summer tournament, and posted all the rules…then 4 weeks before it was to start found out he will have to work too. So I will be running both the 40k and the Magic tournaments at the same time (and pulling all my hair out while I go coo-coo for coco puffs).

Honestly though I’m ok with running both. This current Magic set has been out since October so everyone should be used to the rules for it and I’m not expecting anything more that a couple rules questions there. It’s also going to be a free tournament with a good prize that I picked up in a trade for almost nothing so it should just be a fun day for the Magic players.

40k is the one that will cause more stress as I know at least one person, who is a known cheater, will be there. And it’s a bunch of newer players who may not know the rules as well. Entry fee is $20 and with a possible 16 players, plus whatever prize money GW gives us, that means several hundred dollars of prizes are on the line. Tensions will be high and arguments will be many. I’ll be counting on the guys from Segmentum North to help keep an eye on things and alert me to problems.

What is stressing me out at the moment however is: I don't have prizes. The tournament placers will get gift certificates for GW products, as always, but I should have actual, physical prizes for the Painting and Best Theme competitions, along with the Judges Choice award and Participation prizes. But the store owners (holders of the purse-strings) will not allow me to purchase anything as they think GW will be sending some extra stuff that we can use. But we don’t actually know what, if anything, they will be sending. I argued and said that I don’t think they will be sending enough stuff for every prize. I have been told that I have to wait until it arrives before I am allowed to get anything else so they can see what they got. That will probably come the week of (forgot to mention: the tournament is next weekend) which will be far too late for me to order anything (which needs to be done NOW). The store owners are out of their minds if they think GW is going to send ALL the prizes. They may send a few extra things, but not the 16 small prizes and 3 large ones I need. I could have bought them out of pocket but I have been told by the store that they may decide not to reimburse me (and I know they have not reimbursed tournament organizers in the past). It’s so very frustrating because the money for the prizes comes out of the entry fees that are supposed to be for prizes…its not even going to cost them anything.

Gone are my dreams of cool 40k posters and scenery sets like I wanted to do. So I apologize ahead of time if all you get is a dinky paintbrush or whatever I can find lying around the store (and convince the crazy owners to part with).
Yoderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15081783998629992609noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1321640833311614956.post-32803946858865838112011-12-30T19:37:00.002-06:002012-01-11T18:54:46.100-06:00History of Gaming pt 3 - RPGs
I began role-playing back in high school. This is probably the oldest form of “geek” gaming: PnP RPG, Pen and Paper Role-Playing Game.

A couple friends would get together during lunch, study hall, or after school and play D&D (Dungeons and Dragons). I like Elves so 99% of the time I play as an Elf. I’m broadening my experiences and playing something other than an Elf right now: a Half-Elf (baby steps).

The most notable time was when we went to a State Park and were playing on a table in one of the picnic areas. About an hour in a Park Ranger comes up and tells us they had reports that a group of teenagers were plotting to kill people. He got a chuckle out of it when he saw that we were playing D&D and just asked us to be quieter so others around us didn’t hear.

After high school I didn’t play much. Single games here are there but DM’s are hard to come by and I don’t DM much. I ran a couple Star Wars and Serenity games while I was in the military but people would lose interest or schedules wouldn’t line up so it was hard to get regular games in.

I forget if it was last winter or spring but a friend that I play Warhammer with said he was going to be running a game with a friend of his and to introduce his son to role-playing. He was looking for “serious players” so I said I was interested and could commit to weekly games. If I remember right in the beginning we were trying to decide between using D&D 3.5 (much loved but flawed) or 4th edition (new and debatably not serious enough of a system). Then he found out about a system called Pathfinder. Pathfinder was created by guys who used to work on D&D and takes all the rules of D&D 3.5 but fixes most of the problems.

My standard class is the ranger but I wanted to try something different. It was decided that, while there would be a good amount of dungeons, we wanted actual role-playing to feature. A lot of gaming groups just like to go in and roll dice to beat monsters, the acting out of the character interactions takes a backseat. We are playing a “no evil” campaign so all the characters have to be good or neutral. So I decided to play a Sorcerer who wanted to be a spy so his magic focuses on disguise and charming others. This is an almost unheard of move by most “role-players” as a sorcerer has very limited spells. This would make me almost useless in combat as I have no offensive spells. The tradeoff is that I have very high charisma and spells to make people either not see me, or like me a lot, which helps out a lot in towns and getting information for our missions. I decided on the Shadow Bloodline as its higher level abilities are very powerful for someone who wants to be a spy. My character is true neutral; he does whatever seems to be best at the moment. I was originally planning to go for either the Shadow Dancer or Master Spy prestige classes so I knew I would need a couple levels of Rogue to get the necessary skills. I decided my race would be Half-elf as they get to chose 2 favored classes to get bonuses in, this would allow me to multiclass easier.

My character’s background is that he is from a noble, but evil, family of the main city in the world who desire to control rulers through spying and deceit. Somewhere in their past the family made a dark pact with beings from the Shadow Plane in order to be granted magical powers. I am the current scion of those powers but my predecessor died before teaching me how to use them. So the family has sent me off on my own to learn to control them. That way if I fail or something goes wrong I can’t be traced back to them as no one outside the family knows they are evil. So I set off to learn how to spy on and control whatever groups and cities I come across. Originally the group was my Half-elf Sorcerer, a Human Cavalier, a Dwarven Warrior, A Human Alchemist, and an Elven Cleric. The cleric is the DM’s character cause we needed a healer. Another player was going to be joining us and playing a healer so this was just going to be temporary. We set up the cavalier as the party leader as that’s what his character would have done, but I started out working to gain control of the decisions and just let him think he was the one actually making them. When we started out I was doing this without the actual players knowing about it but through talking about the game during breaks and from things my character did when theirs weren’t around they soon figured it out. A couple other players joined but most were newer to role-playing and weren’t serious enough or didn’t mix well with the group so we got rid of them. Only the Barbarian is still in the group and we still didn’t have a healer so the DM decided to run his Cleric as a permanent part. We also decided that the alchemist as a class wasn’t working with the group so the player changed to a Wizard.

The Cavalier player had to stop playing due to his work schedule and having a baby so my character actually stepped up as the party leader. This is amusing for me for several reasons. I no longer have to try to control the group from behind the scenes. I just pretend to run it democratically so everyone thinks they get a say in what we do. I think I am also the only non good aligned character. I’m very shady and have been stealing things from people we come across in the game, etc. Now I’m in control of the party inventory…I steal from it all the time. The players know cause I tell the DM but their character’s don’t. I let them have pretty much what they want from it and give them a cut of the money we make to they don’t realize but I take more stuff and money than their characters do all the time.

We are playing through the Rise of the Runelords campaign. Its mostly fun but it does try to kill off characters, one of the guys we ended up getting rid of went through 3 characters. Only the dwarf hasn’t actually died, but he’s come very close a few times. We’ve played through the first couple chapters and so far we are the Heroes of Sandpoint and Magnimar. Through my characters manipulation I pretty much control Sandpoint (what’s left of it) and have set myself up as a noble and friend of the Mayor of Magnimar. We have stopped the murder rituals to bring back the runelords and have now moved on to re-taking a fortress from ogres.

During the beginning of the campaign in Sandpoint the general store owner’s daughter began to try and seduce me. I played along with it to not cause a fuss (though her dad wanted to kill me). She was using me to get attention and social status and I was using her as cover and to get in good with the town. Our tryst continued whenever I showed up in town between solving its problems and she began telling everyone we were going to be married. She started following along when we went to Magnimar so I had to decide to dump her, kill her, or what I ended up doing, marry her. The DM turned her into a Rogue (since I have 3 levels of Sorcerer and 4 levels of Rogue) and I took the Leadership feat at lvl 7 so she is now my follower and a member of the party.

Since the party didn’t have a rogue I took the levels as one since I was planning on it anyway. I just did it earlier that I was planning to gain the combat abilities, trap finding, and skills. I will probably go back to taking sorcerer levels now because the 9th level sorcerer ability is amazing (just 6 more levels to go) Leveling as a utility sorcerer seems very slow at first. You really are almost useless in combat for the first couple of levels so most of your time is spent trying to keep away from getting hit. Once you can get a couple more feats its ok. I have a light crossbow that I use so I took Point-Blank shot and Precise Shot. Getting to add the rogue’s backstab/sneak attack is nice so I spend a lot of my time maneuvering to get flanking. Having my follower will make that easier cause the DM is going to have me control her in combat so I don’t have to try and get the others in the party to figure out what I’m doing.

Not sure if I'm going to multi-class again into a prestige after all. I kinda like just the Sorcerer/Rogue combo.

The party is currently:

Alyssa, elven Cleric, played by the DM, Lacy

Dolgrim Floorsmasher, a dwarven Fighter/Armor-master, played by the DM’s 10 year old son, Tristan (very good at gaming for a young’n)

Kronk, a human Barbarian/Druid, played by Xander (one of the best role-players I’ve ever met)

Trevor the Phoenix, the human Wizard, played by Mike (DM’s friend and our resident Rule Lawyer*)

Alexandria, Trevor’s young apprentice (follower controlled by Mike)

Lord Jon’lin Sandor, my Half-elf Sorcerer/Rogue

Solsta Sandor, a human Rogue (follower controlled by me)

*When I started playing I was very much a Rule Lawyer (and honestly still am a bit) but once I started to DM I realized how annoying and hard to deal with it is. Now whenever I start as a player with a new DM I give them my pledge to do my best not to.
Yoderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15081783998629992609noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1321640833311614956.post-106178267216708502011-12-29T18:59:00.001-06:002012-01-11T18:54:24.683-06:00History of Gaming pt 2 - Warhammer
I started playing Warhammer 40k in 2004 as my buddy living next door to me in the dorms (I was military at the time) started playing it with some guys in his shop. It was 4th edition at the time and, after reading the fluff (the background story) of all the armies, decided Necrons were my favorite and I initially wanted to play them but my buddy did too and I like variety. I didn’t see Orks played at the LGS much at the time so I chose them. He started off with the Necrons and I built a Speed Freaks Ork army.

After we got out of the dorms we lived together with a couple other guys in a house I bought and my friend soon stopped playing. So I got the Necrons off him as part of the rent and built them up to a full army.

Necrons were MEQ (Marine equivalent) and “broke” a lot of the main rules with their army specific ones, but after you play them for a bit you realized that there isn’t much variety. They only have a few unit choices, about half as many as the other armies, and only had 2 different builds (your combined unit choices taken to win) that worked.

The Orks Speed Freaks had all your troops start either in trukks or on warbikes so everything could move fast and far. It was all about getting across the table as fast as you could to assault your enemy.

I spent several years playing around with all the different units in both armies and mostly losing every game I played. I didn’t care much, I knew I didn’t have a power army built to win. I just liked trying out different unit combinations to see how they worked together and found some fun combos. I had pretty much stopped playing Necrons, too boring, and had been playing pretty much only Orks for about a year when 5th edition came out and the rule changes really changed the game.

The new rules made the Necrons even more boring. They pretty much only had one build that worked anymore and were very predictable so everyone knew how to beat them. They also changed the Orks quite a bit but made them better. They had a new codex (their army specific rules) that came out at the same time written for the new rules. I played around a bit and decided to change my Speed Freaks to an elite horde (big units of cheap models backed up by a few smaller but powerful units) army. It is the army I still use today years later.

Lead by a Warboss or Big Mek (depending on whether I want the melee strength of the Warboss or the firepower of the Big Mek’s Shokk Attack Gun) it has 2 units of 60 ork boys (the basic troop choice) with guns instead of axes, backed up by a small Loota unit (stronger guns) and a Nob unit.

The boys and Lootas can put out a lot of firepower. They don’t shoot very well but with each boy getting 2 shots the law of averages kicks in and you are going to get quite a few hits each round.

That is all very powerful but when you add the Nobs it made the army seem unstoppable.

Nobs are the Orks sergeants and the new codex let them all take power weapons (so my opponents don’t get armor saves) and it let them take a Painboy (doctor) who could give them cybork bodies for really good saves and he also give them a rule called Feel No Pain which gives them a good chance to ignore the wounds if they happen to fail their save. So I put 10 of them together in a trukk and let them wreak havoc as they hurt a lot and are hard to kill. Toss in a couple Killer Kans for some killy stuff and that’s my army.

Both Orks and Necrons are low initiative so they usually hit last in combat and I decided I wanted to play a higher initiative army. So I built up a Space Marine army and decided the Iron Hands would be my chapter. I use a Master of the Forge, Terminator Librarian, three 10-man Tactical Squads, two 5-man Assault Terminator Squads, 4 Dreadnoughts, and a Land Raider Redeemer. I think it’s a good mix of shooty and assaulty.

I am going to be rebuilding my Necron army in the coming year from the new codex. The game is getting crazy expensive. When I started you could get a decent 2000pt army for around $300. Not anymore, now it’s more like $600. I’m glad I have the Warriors, Scarabs, and Destroyers already so I only have to get the new vehicles. I’m thinking a Command Barge, 3 Annihilator Barges, and a Ghost Arc or three.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I began playing Warhammer Fantasy a couple years after I started 40k. I was interested in it and found a good sized Wood Elf army on Ebay for $200 bucks. Got a couple more units to put in it and started playing here and there when I could talk someone into it. 40k is by far the favorite game up here so there are only a couple Fantasy players.
When 8<sup>th</sup> edition came out my, much beloved, Wood Elves became mostly useless. Since this edition is all about magic I decided to go High Elves next. They are a good magic/close combat army but very fragile and die quickly.
I had a couple friends sell me their Warriors of Chaos for decent prices so I picked them up. I find it rather amusing that I loathe Chaos in 40k, but love them in Fantasy. I have plenty of Marauders, Warriors, and Knights that I’m going to turn into a Nurgle army. I just need a Sorcerer or two, some Chosen and maybe a Giant or Hell Cannon to finish up that army.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So I have 3 40k armies: 2000+ pts each of Necrons, Orks, and Space Marines. For Fantasy I have 3 as well: 2250 pts of Warriors of Chaos, 2500 pts of High Elves, and 5000+ pts of Wood Elves.

Out of everything only the Orks are a fully painted army. I hate painting, cannot stand it. The only reason the Orks are painted was because they need to be in order to compete in tournaments. The Iron Hands are about half painted, same as the Necrons. I don’t like the color scheme I used on the Necrons, bright silver with blue and black highlights, so I’m going to have to try and strip them when I rebuild to start over. I think black with green highlights looks really good on the new vehicles so that may become my color scheme.

I’ll talk to the guys over at Segmentum North when I get started to figure out what I want to do. There are several really good painters there that can give me tips. Maybe I can workout a deal or something with those guys to have them paint my stuff. Because even though I painted my Orks, it’s not in any way a good job. I call them my Saturday Morning Cartoon Orks; it looks like a 5 year old painted them.
Yoderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15081783998629992609noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1321640833311614956.post-17791593479035371432011-12-28T19:16:00.001-06:002012-01-11T18:54:06.711-06:00History of Gaming pt1 - Magic: the Gathering
I began playing Magic only a year and a half ago. I’d always been interested in the game but it was taboo in the village I grew up in. A friend of mine and his little sister were attacked and repeatedly stabbed by their older brother. The rumor going around was that he had lost a game of Magic against my friend and went crazy because of it. Whatever the real reason Magic became banned in the school and in public so no one played it.

Once I grew up I realized how much money would be needed to play competitively so I decided to wait until I was financially stable enough to afford it. I spent years buying and building up my Warhammer stuff. Finally in 2010 I figured I was pretty much done buying that so I was ready to start Magic.

I started played casually with a couple friends and borrowed decks at the local game store (LGS) until I figured out what kinds of decks I liked. Then I started to buy cards to build my own decks and compete in tournaments. Every new set release I buy at least 1 box of booster packs and buy random packs throughout the weeks in between events. I started out losing in the tournaments, getting knocked out in the first couple rounds. Slowly but surely I got better at the game and deck building. Learning what card types worked well together and how to combine those combos into decks.

Right now I have 2 tournament decks, 1 deck of the current legal format (Standard) for casual or multiplayer games, 5 decks of various formats for multiplayer games, and 3 Commander decks.

My main tournament deck is one of the best decks at the store and I usually place in the top 3 for tournaments. I know several people that follow the Pro tournaments and just build decks that are exactly like whatever decks are winning there, but that’s not my thing. I actually started winning in tournaments when I began to build decks just to beat the copy-cat pro decks. Now I build whatever decks I like and suit my playing style: Usually fast aggressive decks with lots of cheap creatures (Weenies), decks that stop cards from being played and/or remove cards that already have been (Control) or decks that play a lot of mana and big creatures quickly (Ramp). They often end up being close to what the pros are playing, good is good after all so the really good players will build similar decks, but I like to put my own twist on things.

While I’m good at and enjoy tournaments; I actually prefer to just play casual multiplayer and have a lot of fun with that. Whether it’s bringing out a powerful deck (Elves) so that everyone at the table tries to take me out or playing tricky decks and working the table politics (talking others at the table into helping you). I usually don’t care if I win, its just fun to see what happens when a bunch of people all sit down and play different types of decks against each other at the same time.

All but one of my decks that I use for multiplayer can be played one on one, but that one deck is built specifically for multiplayer. It doesn’t have a win condition (combo of cards that can win the game for you when played right), its only purpose is to mess with other player’s decks and changeup control of the table by adding in random factors that no one can control.

My current favorite format is Commander. Normal magic decks are 60 cards that can have 4 of any copy. That makes them pretty reliable (when you have a good chance of getting the cards you want because there are multiple copies of the cards in the deck). Commander is 100 cards but only one copy of each. That makes it pretty crazy because you can’t count on getting your main combos on the table. You have to set up the deck with many cards that could possibly combo together. It’s the ultimate test of deck building and playing. The games end up being long due to how many rounds it can take to finally get a combo out and win. To me that’s part of the fun, trying to hold off the other player and stop their combos long enough to get your own, but for others it’s too slow or long of a game.

In the last year and a half of buying and playing Magic my average spending is about $200 dollars a month. What do I have to show for it?

My main tournament deck is worth over $450, the other one is worth about $350. My Standard casual deck is also worth about $350. All the other decks are worth anywhere from $200-$350 each. I also have a binder of rare cards that is worth hundreds.

Think that’s a lot? Not so much when you consider I have 2 friends that each have a deck worth over $1000. Pretty crazy.
Yoderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15081783998629992609noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1321640833311614956.post-50174420190733575712011-12-28T01:42:00.000-06:002011-12-28T01:42:08.858-06:00New blogI will be updating this blog semi monthly with posts about my gaming life.
